IKIA Registers Over 4,000 Flights in 1 Month

EghtesadOnline: Imam Khomeini International Airport has registered 4,099 flights during the month to Aug. 22.

Farough Alikhani, an Imam Khomeini Airport City official, said a total of 740,719 passengers were transported to and from the airport during the month under review.

He added that 14,411 tons of luggage were transported during the same period, the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development's news service reported.

The number of incoming flights stood at 2,048, along with 355,665 passengers and 6,970 tons of luggage at the airport, Financial Tribune reported.

The number of outgoing flights stood at 2,051, along with 385,054 passengers and 7,441 tons of luggage during the month.

IKIA has the biggest share of international flights operated in Iran.

The airport registered 47,446 takeoffs and landings in the last Iranian fiscal year that ended March 20, 2019, to register a 19% decline.

More than 7.27 million passengers and 141,704 tons of cargos were transported from the airport during the period to rank third on the list of Iran’s busiest airports. The figures show a 19% and 14% decline YOY.

It has been distinguished as the third fastest-growing major airport in the world.

A study by Routes Online shows the airport grew in terms of passenger numbers by 48.6% during the first half of 2018 to 3.93 million, helped by Ata Airlines, following the rise in frequencies to Istanbul Ataturk.

Operated by Iran Airports Company, IKIA is located 30 kilometers southwest of Iran's capital city Tehran.

The airport's new Salaam Terminal officially launched its first flight on June 22.

Salaam Terminal is Iran’s first smart terminal designed by domestic experts and designers, with an annual capacity of transporting five million passengers. The new terminal has increased IKIA's capacity by 80%.

The construction of the so-called "Salaam Terminal/Gallery" was started 10 years ago in the fiscal March 2009-10 with the collaboration of Imam Khomeini Airport City Company and Mostazafan Foundation.

IKIA authorities have placed the construction of a third terminal at the airport on the agenda. Iranshahr Terminal’s first phase is expected to be completed in the next five years with a capacity of transporting 25 million passengers per year. The final phase has been planned for transporting 110 million passengers annually.
