Iran's Steel Output Tops 13m Tons

EghtesadOnline: Iran's major steelmakers produced a total of 5.83 million tons of finished steel products, including hot- and cold-rolled coils, rebar, beams, pipes and wide, galvanized sheets during the first five months of the current fiscal year (March 21-Aug. 22) to register a 9% growth year-on-year.

According to the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization’s latest report, Mobarakeh Steel Company and its subsidiary Saba Steel had the largest share of production with 3.64 million tons (up 4% YOY).

MSC was followed by Esfahan Steel Company (ESCO) with 948,991 tons (up 4% YOY), Oxin Steel Company with 355,896 tons (up 16% YOY), Khorasan Steel Company with 269,665 tons (up 21% YOY), Azarbaijan Steel Company with 140,376 tons (up 28% YOY), IASCO with 121,048 tons—114,728 tons of rebar (up 21% YOY) and 6,320 tons of “other” products (up 62% YOY), Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Automotive Sheet Company with 110,694 tons (up 22% YOY), Bonab Steel Company with 112,522 tons—906 tons of beams, 109,975 tons of rebar (up 93% YOY) and 1,641 tons of “other” products (down 54% YOY), Ahvaz Rolling and Pipe Manufacturing Company with 85,000 tons (up 58% YOY) and INSIG with 46,100 tons—31,672 tons of rebar, 10,093 tons of beam and 4,335 tons of pipes (up 65% YOY).

The production of finished steel products stood at 1.14 million tons in the fifth Iranian month (July 23-Aug. 22) to register a 10% growth YOY, according to Financial Tribune.

The total production of ingot, bloom and billet (semi finished products) reached 8.53 million tons during the five months under review, up 4% YOY.

MSC, with its subsidiaries Saba and Hormozgan Steel, was the biggest producer with 3.88 million tons (down 1% YOY). 

KSC came next with 1.6 million tons (up 1% YOY), followed by ESCO with 997,470 tons (up 6% YOY), South Kaveh Steel Company with 491,655 tons (up 12% YOY), Khorasan Steel Company with 462,835 tons (up 15% YOY), Chadormalu Steel Company with 407,896 tons (up 14% YOY), Arfa Iron and Steel Company with 370,371 tons (up 10% YOY), Iran Alloy Steel Company with 203,071 tons (up 18% YOY), Bonab Steel Company with 105,840 tons (up 319%) and INSIG with 3,437 tons (unchanged).

As for output in the fifth month ending Aug. 22, a total of 1.67 million tons of slab, bloom, billet and ingot were produced to register a 3% growth YOY.

 

 

Upstream Production

A total of about 39.38 million tons of iron ore products were produced in Iran during the five months to Aug. 22.

Iron ore concentrate output stood at 19.72 million tons to register a 4% growth compared with the corresponding period of the year before.

Golgohar Mining and Industrial Complex accounted for 6.74 million tons of the total output (up 2% YOY), followed by Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Complex with 4.26 million tons (up 15% YOY), Middle East Mines and Mining Industries Development Holding Company with 2.12 million tons (up 1% YOY), Iran Central Iron Ore Company with 2.1 million tons (down 7% YOY), Goharzamin Iron Ore Company with 1.74 million tons (down 5% YOY), Opal Parsian Sangan with 1.25 million tons (up 5% YOY), National Development Industrial and Mineral Company with 905,347 tons (up 96% YOY), Sabanour Mining and Industrial Development Company with 361,539 tons (down 33% YOY) and Jalalabad Iron Ore Complex with 218,018 tons (down 14% YOY).

Iron ore concentrate output during the fifth Iranian month amounted to 3.82 million tons–up 9% compared with last year’s same month.

The production of iron ore in the form of fines/lumps totaled 2.02 million tons during the period, going down 40% YOY. Production in the fifth month stood at 359,249 tons to register a 51% decline YOY.

Pellet output hit 17.64 million tons during the five months, down 1% YOY. Golgohar was the largest producer with 5.03 million tons (down 3% YOY), followed by Mobarakeh Steel Company with 3.06 million tons (down 5% YOY), Khouzestan Steel Company with 2.69 million (down 6% YOY), MIDHCO with 2.41 million tons (up 16% YOY), Chadormalu with 1.74 million tons (up 25% YOY), Opal Parsian Sangan with 1.42 million tons (down 18% YOY), Sangan Mineral and Industrial Company with 630,385 tons (down 36% YOY), Khorasan Steel Company with 464,536 tons (up 140% YOY) and Sabanour Mining and Industrial Development Company with 163,258 tons (up 19% YOY).

Pellet production witnessed a year-on-year change during the fifth month to 3.2 million tons.

The production of direct-reduced iron, also called sponge iron, stood at 11.51 million tons during the five months, up 11% YOY. 

Mobarakeh accounted for the largest share of the output with 3.11 million tons (up 4% YOY), followed by KSC with 1.69 million tons (up 12% YOY), Golgohar with 1.17 million tons, Hormozgan Steel Company with 675,652 tons (down 10% YOY), South Kaveh Steel Company with 626,468 tons (down 2% YOY), Chadormalu Steel Company with 622,999 tons, Khorasan Steel Company with 598,865 million tons (up 13% YOY), Saba Steel Complex with 480,540 tons (up 3% YOY)and Arfa Steel Company with 323,241 tons (down 14% YOY).

Other major DRI producers included Ghadir Iron and Steel Company with 320,591 tons (down 7% YOY), Sabzevar Steel Company with 301,267 tons (unchanged YOY), Sefiddasht Steel Company with 295,051 tons (up 34% YOY), MIDHCO with 291,232 tons (down 23% YOY), Neyriz Steel Complex with 281,669 tons (down 7 YOY), Shadegan Steel Complex with 243,468 tons (down 18% YOY), Mianeh Steel Complex with 223,178 tons (down 25% YOY), Saba Steel with 199,310 tons and Esfahan Steel Company with 51,452 tons (down 20% YOY).

DRI production reached 2.28 million tons during the month ending Aug. 22, indicating a 9% growth YOY.

Iran is the world's 10th biggest producer of steel and the second biggest producer of sponge iron after India, according to World Steel Association.
