Iran's RIPI Implementing Oil Research Projects

EghtesadOnline: The Research Institute of Petroleum Industry is implementing several projects in the fields of oil exploration, drilling, extraction, catalyst production and energy saving, the head of RIPI said.

“RIPI programs are to help develop the oil and gas industry,” Jafar Tofiqi said, adding that in the exploration field, several oil and gas projects are underway in areas that have not yet been explored or having a bigger capacity, such as the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, ISNA reported.

Regarding conventional oil and gas resources, the official said the institute is currently cooperating with the Exploration Department of the National Iranian Oil Company.

“In the field of drilling and development of drilling systems, we have endeavored to accelerate activities and our operations will continue in this regard,” Financial Tribune quoted him as saying.

Referring to the program to boost extraction from oil and gas fields as a major project, Tofiqi said, “We have been able to achieve success through the activities carried out in Ahvaz oilfield”.

Speaking about the downstream sector, he said, “We are currently focusing on the launch of sulfur recovery units, which can be beneficial for the industry.”

At present, RIPI has succeeded in developing industries producing several catalysts that are used in Ilam, Isfahan, Kermanshah and Arak refineries.

“The institute has also taken strong measures regarding saving energy, one of which is the commercialization of CHP technology,” Tofiqi said.

CHP is an energy efficient technology that generates electricity and captures the heat that would otherwise be wasted to provide useful thermal energy—such as steam or hot water—that can be used for space heating, cooling, domestic hot water and industrial processes.

Founded in 1959 in Tehran, RIPI is a research and development arm of the Oil Ministry.

The institute is a major research institute in Iran and is the largest of its kind in the Middle East. RIPI has become a major technology provider for Iran’s petroleum industry.

The strategy of RIPI is focused on creating added value via production and commercialization of technology, with the approach of carrying out research for the development of new technologies and indigenization of new technologies.

RIPI operates in three sectors of upstream and downstream petroleum industry, as well as energy and environment.

The upstream petroleum research center carries out fundamental and applied researches, conducts comprehensive studies and offers scientific, laboratory and scientific advisory services to meet the technological needs of the industry in the upstream sector and solve related problems.

This is while downstream petroleum research center plays a key role in the production and exportation of science and technology in oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

By carrying out research and development projects, the Energy and Environment Division acquires technical know-how in oil industry and solves problems related to the fields of energy, industrial production, environment and biotechnology.
