15% Decline in Tehran's IKIA Air Traffic

EghtesadOnline: Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport registered 23,221 flights during the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21-Sept. 22), which indicates a decline of 15.7% compared with last year’s corresponding period.

A total of 3.96 million passengers were transported during the six-month period, down 8.5% year-on-year, Mehr News Agency reported.

The volume of cargo transported at the airport stood at 77,503 tons during the period.

The number of incoming flights stood at 11,613 carrying 1,996,355 passengers and 38,628 tons of luggage, Financial Tribune reported.

A total of 11,608 outbound flights carried 1,968,952 passengers and 38,875 tons of luggage.

During the sixth Iranian month ending Sept. 22, Imam Khomeini International Airport transported 761,170 passengers.

A total of 4,232 flights were operated at IKIA during the month under review.

More than 14.71 million tons of luggage were transported during the same period, IKAC News service reported.

The number of incoming flights stood at 2,116 carrying 374,680 passengers and 7,371 tons of luggage.

Imam Khomeini International Airport registered 47,446 takeoffs and landings in the last fiscal year that ended on March 20, 2019, to register a 19% decline.

More than 7.27 million passengers and 141,704 tons of cargos were transported from the airport during the period to rank third on the list of Iran’s busiest airports in 2018. The figures show a 19% and 14% decline respectively year-on-year.

IKIA has the biggest share of international flights operated in Iran, making it the third fastest-growing major airport in the world. 

Operated by Iran Airports Company, IKIA is located 30 kilometers southwest of Iran's capital city Tehran.

IKIA's new Salaam Terminal officially launched its first flight on June 22. It is Iran’s first smart terminal designed by domestic experts and designers. 

The terminal has a capacity to transport five million passengers per year, increasing IKIA's overall capacity by 80%.

IKIA authorities have planned the construction of a third terminal. Iranshahr Terminal’s first phase is expected to be completed within five years with a capacity of transporting 25 million passengers per year. The final phase has been planned for transporting 110 million passengers annually.
