“Malaysia does not support the reimposition of the unilateral sanctions by the US against Iran,” he told the Doha Forum, also attended by Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
Malaysia and other countries have lost “a big market” because of the sanctions on Iran, he said.
“Such sanctions clearly violate the United Nations charter and international law; sanctions can only be applied by the United Nations in accordance with the charter,” Financial Tribune quoted him as saying.
Washington reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran after US President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, including the US, last year.
The US sanctions prevent Iran’s trade and banking ties with other countries, which restrict the import of vital medicines and cause the death of medical patients.
