Located in Bijar County and Hasanabad-e Yasukand City, the two plants cost $2.3 million, the Energy Ministry news portal Paven reported.
The Bijar plant has a capacity of treating 9,760 cubic meters of wastewater per day. With 150 kilometers of sewer lines, it covers 61,000 people.
The other plant is smaller and will process 1,300 cubic meters of wastewater a day. With a 20km-network it will be used by 7,000 people, according to Financial Tribune.
Both projects will contribute to farming in the region, as the recycled wastewater will be used for agricultural purposes.
In the past six years, 64 wastewater treatment plants have come on stream in the country and more are to come in later years as processed wastewater is a reliable source for the industrial and agro sectors.
With the launch of the two units, there are now 232 wastewater treatment plants operational in Iran.
Approximately 7.5 billion cubic meters of usable water is produced annually, of which 4.3 bcm is wasted.
If wastewater is not properly treated it can have dire consequences for human health and the environment.
The major aim of wastewater treatment is to remove as much of the suspended solids as possible before the remaining water, called effluent, is discharged back to the environment. As solid material decays, it uses up oxygen, which is needed by the plants and animals living in the water.
On Tuesday 11 other projects were inaugurated, including electricity and water supply to rural areas.
The Energy Ministry has 34 power and water projects in Kurdestan worth $700 million.
