Hope for Closer Ties With Oman

EghtesadOnline: President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Haitham bin Tariq Al Said on becoming the new sultan of Oman, hoping for development of ties between Tehran and Muscat.

In a message on Monday, Rouhani extended greetings to Haitham bin Tariq on his ascension to the Omani throne, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The Iranian president said relations between Tehran and Muscat under Oman’s late ruler Sultan Qaboos were based upon “mutual trust”, according to Financial Tribune.

“I hope bilateral relations during the era of your leadership would further grow in all fields through wisdom and discernment,” he said.

Rouhani also wished health and success for the new sultan and prosperity for the “brotherly” nation of Oman.

Haitham bin Tariq was named the new Omani sultan by Qaboos in a letter opened following his death.

Sultan Qaboos, who died on Friday, had come to power in 1970 in a palace coup against his father.

The late monarch has been lauded for the mediatory role he played between conflicting parties in the Persian Gulf region during his near-50 year rule, which also saw the emergence of an educated middle class in the Arab country.
