Airport Traffic Hit by Downturn in Nine Months

EghtesadOnline: Iran Airports Company registered 318,727 takeoffs and landings during the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Dec. 21), which indicate a 3% decline compared with the similar period of last year.

More than 39.44 million passengers were transported during the period, indicating no significant change year-on-year, Financial Tribune reported.

Over 397,565 tons of cargos were handled during the same period, which also show no significant change compared with the corresponding period of last year, IAC's latest report published on its website shows.

A total of 267,362 takeoffs and landings were registered by domestic flights during the nine-month period, down 2% YOY. More than 31.58 million passengers and 240,590 tons of cargo were transported domestically, both indicating a 1% rise YOY.

On the international front, 51.365 takeoffs and landings were registered, down by 9% YOY. A total of 7.85 million passengers and more than 156,975 tons of cargo were transported to and from overseas destinations, down 5% and 1% respectively year-on-year.

Similar to previous IAC reports, Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport was the busiest Iranian airport during the period with 93,131 takeoffs and landings, registering a 2% decline.

The airport handled 11.11 million passengers, showing a 1% decrease and around 77.475 tons of cargo, indicating no significant YOY change.

Mashhad International Airport was the second busiest airport with 47,701 takeoffs and landings, indicating a 1% YOY decrease. It transported 7.02 million passengers (unchanged YOY) and 66,325 tons of cargos, down 3% year-on-year.

Imam Khomeini International Airport registered 34,395 takeoffs and landings (a 10% YOY decrease), while transporting more than 5.63 million passengers (a 4% decline) and over 113,718 tons of cargos showing a 1% increase YOY. IKIA ranked third on the list of Iran’s busiest airports during the nine-month period.

From the ninth Iranian month's perspective (Nov. 22-Dec. 21), a total of 34,288 takeoffs and landings were registered, which indicate a 7% growth compared with the similar period of last year.

More than 4.12 million passengers and 39,978 tons of cargos were transported during the month, both indicating an 8% rise YOY.

The report shows domestic flights registered 29,792 takeoffs and landings from Nov. 22 to Dec. 21, up 8% YOY. Close to 3.53 million passengers and 25,589 tons of cargo were transported domestically, indicating a 10% and 7% increase respectively YOY.

On the international front, 4,496 takeoffs and landings were registered, showing a 2% fall YOY. A total of 598,430 passengers and more than 14,389 tons of cargo were transported to and from overseas destinations, indicating a 3% decrease and 10% rise respectively YOY.

Iran Airports Company is an arm of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, which manages 54 airports across the country.
