Shahsavar Arghash, managing director of Iranian Offshore Oil Company, a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company, made the statement at the 16th International Kish Energy Exhibition (Kish ENEX 2020) on Wednesday in Kish Island, ILNA reported.
“APG is being used in power plants in the island instead of other eco-unfriendly fuels like diesel”, Financial Tribune quoted him as saying.
Close to 177 million cubic meters of gas was burnt (annually) in flares in Sirri Island oilfields before 2006 when IOOC started to transfer the gas to power plants in tourist island that also is home to a free economic zone.
Flaring is the burning of natural gas that cannot be processed or sold. Flaring of APG is an important safety measure at many oil and gas production sites, as it prevents industrial plant equipment from over-pressuring and exploding.
“If power stations did not have access to flare gas, they would have used 15 million barrels of diesel in the 13 years that would cost $1 billion.”
Sirri Island in the Persian Gulf has several oilfields namely Alvand, Nosrat, Sivand, Dena and Esfand.
The Island is 76 km from Bandar-e Lengeh and 50 km west of the strategic Abu Musa Island.
It is one of six in the Abu Musa Island Group (part of the southern Hormozgan Province). The island is almost 5.6 km long and 3 km wide.
Organized in collaboration with the oil and energy ministries and Kish Free Zone Organization, the exposition (Jan 20-23) is attended by 140 Iranian and international companies from China, South Korea, Japan, the UAE, Russia, the Netherlands, Italy and the UK.
