MSC Outperforms All Iranian Steelmakers

EghtesadOnline: Mobarakeh Steel Company registered the largest share of steel production in Iran during the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2019-Jan. 20) with an output of 14.65 million tons.

The company produced 6.84 million tons of finished steel during the period, posting a 4% rise compared with last year's corresponding period, Financial Tribune reported.

In addition, 7.8 million tons of semi-finished steel were produced by MSC, going up by 1% year-on-year, the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization’s latest report shows.

Located in southwestern Isfahan, Mobarakeh Steel Company is the biggest steel producer in Iran and the Middle East and North Africa region.

In terms of finished steel production, MSC was followed by Esfahan Steel Company (ESCO) with 1.93 million tons (up 6% YOY), Oxin Steel Company with 652,580 tons (up 25% YOY), Khorasan Steel Company with 513,922 tons (up 9% YOY), Azarbaijan Steel Company with 312,003 tons (up 7% YOY), IASCO with 256,717 tons—224,184 tons of rebar (up 12% YOY) and 32,533 tons of “other products” (up 228% YOY), Bonab Steel Company with 203,596 tons—906 tons of beams, 201,049 tons of rebar (up 252% YOY) and 1,641 tons of “other products” (down 54% YOY), Ahvaz Rolling and Pipe Manufacturing Company with 205,000 tons (down 15% YOY), Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Automotive Sheet Company with 198,071 tons (up 5% YOY), and INSIG with 154,361 tons—109,114 tons of rebar (up 170% YOY), 36,007 tons of beams (up 493% YOY), and 9,240 tons of pipes (up 90% YOY).

MSC’s semis production was followed by KSC with 3.13 million tons (down 1% YOY), followed by ESCO with 2.01 million tons (up 7% YOY), South Kaveh Steel Company with 981,000 tons (up 14% YOY), Khorasan Steel Company with 954,282 tons (up 12% YOY), Chadormalu Steel Company with 841,023 tons (up 13% YOY), Arfa Iron and Steel Company with 723,252 tons (up 1% YOY), Iran Alloy Steel Company with 404,926 tons (up 15% YOY), Bonab Steel Company with 214,566 tons (up 750%) and INSIG with 10,726 tons.

The above-mentioned steelmakers, considered as heavyweight producers in Iran, produced a total of 28.36 million tons of steel (semis and finished) during the 10 months to Jan. 20 to register an 11.7% rise year-on-year.

A total of 11.27 million tons of finished steel products, including hot- and cold-rolled coils, rebar, beams, pipes, wide and galvanized sheets were produced by these steel mills during the period under review to register an 8% YOY growth.

Their production of finished steel products stood at 1.14 million tons in the 10th Iranian month (Dec. 22, 2019-Jan. 20), posting a 27% growth YOY.

They produced a total of 17.08 million tons of semi-finished steel, including ingot, bloom and billet (semi-finished products) during the period, up 5% YOY.

As for semis output during the 10th calendar month ending Jan. 20, a total of 1.68 million tons of slab, bloom, billet and ingot were produced to register a 9% growth YOY.

 

 World's 10th Biggest Steelmaker in 2019

Iran was the world's 10th biggest producer of steel and the second biggest producer of sponge iron after India in 2019, according to World Steel Association.

Worldsteel's latest report shows the country produced a total of 31.9 million tons of crude steel during 2019, up 30.1% compared with 2018.

Iran's December output increased 40% year-on-year to hit 2.89 million tons.

Iran was the second biggest producer in the world with 27.73 million tons of DRI production in 2019, registering a 7.7% YOY growth.

Iran’s December DRI output, however, went down 1.1% YOY to hit 2.5 million tons.

The country is aggressively pursuing the target of becoming the world’s sixth largest steel producer as per the 20-Year Vision Plan, which targets the annual production capacity expansion to 55 million tons and 20-25 million tons of exports per year by 2025. 

Iranian steel mills have so far realized about 34 million tons of the capacity target.

According to Chairman of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Khodadad Gharibpour, Iranian steel industry is an export-oriented one that exports more than 40% of its steel output.
