Zarif: Talks with Mogherini focused on Iran nuclear deal, Syria crisis

EghtesadOnline: Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Sunday that EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini held consultation with Iranian officials on the nuclear deal (known as JCPOA) and ways to end the humanitarian plight in Syria.

Zarif made the remarks speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a gathering of Iran's military attaches and defense representative. 

'Ms. Mogherini came to Iran in a special visit not for negotiations but for exchange of views about Syria, putting an end to conflicts and finding a political settlement to the humanitarian crisis in Syria,' the foreign minister said. 

According to IRNA, he said that during the meetings with Mogherini, the Iranian officials underlined the need to respect national resolve of the Syrian people to determine their own destiny and find out a lasting settlement to the crisis. 

Zarif said that during a meeting with President Hassan Rouhani, Mogherini reviewed the implementation of the JCPOA and the efforts need to be made by the Europeans to pave the way for better implementation of the deal. 

Zarif said that the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of major contribution to international campaign against terrorism and as a democratic system which takes its legitimacy from the votes of people, has a say over international issues.
