IMO chief optimistic about future cooperation with Iran

EghtesadOnline: Secretary General of International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Kitack Lim expressed optimism about the future cooperation between IMO and Iran.

Speaking to IRNA in London, Mr. Lim said, 'Iran is one of the most important members of International Maritime Organisation.'

He added, 'Iran has always been active in terms of representation to the IMO meetings, but for the past few years due to some reasons, there was not much cooperation at IMO. But since this year Iran is representing much more excellently, contributing to the IMO meetings which I would like to very much appreciate.'

Lim said, 'I am very much optimistic about the future activities and representation of Iran at IMO and am very confident for working closely with the Iranian government and I look forward to more cooperation between IMO and Iran.' 

On the significance of JCPOA and lifting of sanctions on relationship between IMO and Iran, he said, 'The Iranian government has become significantly cooperative which is very much appreciated and welcomed by the IMO members.'

He stressed that the Iranian performance has been very positive so far.

The remarks were made on the sidelines of a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador in the UK, Mr. Hamid Baeedinejad. 

Baeedinejad presented a copy of his credentials to Mr. Lim, stressing that Iran is ready to strengthen its cooperation with IMO.

IMO is the United Nations' specialized agency responsible for improving maritime safety and preventing pollution from ships.
