Deputy FM urges ICRC to increase activities in Syria, Yemen

EghtesadOnline: Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi referred to disastrous situation of people in Syria and Yemen and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to increase its humanitarian activities in these two countries.

According to the Foreign Ministry Media Department, Araqchi made the remarks in meeting with President of ICRC Peter Maurer here where he also stressed Iran's readiness to assist the international organization in advancing its humanitarian missions in the region.

According to IRNA, he described current situation in Iraq and Syria as very bad and catastrophic.

Referring to the values and teachings of the Holy Islam concerning necessity of respecting and observing human dignity in all situations, Araqchi said the holding of the Conference on Islam and International Humanitarian Law in the city of Qom which is co-organized by the Red Crescent Society of Iran, National Committee of Humanitarian Law and the ICRC is a very positive step towards making world people more acquainted with the profound attitudes of Islam towards mankind.

Maurer underlined existing common points between Islamic humanitarian law and the international humanitarian law and said all must try to promote this reality.

He announced ICRC program for holding dialogue and interaction with influential countries in the region and voiced the interest of the ICRC in increasing its cooperation with Iran.

Maurer added that using Iran's capabilities will help expansion of ICRC activities in the region.
