EghtesadOnline: Iran remains to be sensitive and concerned over the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, says Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Bahram Qasmi.

Qasemi told reporters on Monday that the extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, held recently in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, issued a statement which calls for formation of an executive committee by the OIC member states, to which Iran is a member.

According to IRNA, he added that the executive committee will address the situation of the Muslim minority in Myanmar.

But away from the OIC framework, the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic has been following up the case of Rohingya Muslims, Qasemi said.

'Several weeks ago, Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif sent a message to the newly-elected Secretary General of the United Nations (Antonio Guterres) to raise the issue,' he said.

According to the foreign ministry spokesman, Iran will be one of the members of Committee, that will be set up by the OIC to address the situation of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

'We are going to continue efforts within framework of the OIC and in contact with other international bodies, including the UN, (to address the problem), while calling on Myanmar government to reconsider laws and change the way of treating the people, believing that such a change will be to the interest of the entire people of Myanmar,' he added.
