EghtesadOnline: About 2.25 million tons of rice are estimated to be produced in Iran during the current Iranian year that started on March 21, the head of Iran Rice Council said.

“This is almost the same amount as last year’s production. If everything goes well and no unexpected frost or water shortage is experienced, this goal can be accomplished,” Jamil Alizadeh Shayeq was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency. As Iranians consume 3.2 million tons of rice a year, there is a need for 1 million tons of imports every year.  The government only bans rice imports during the harvest season to support local farmers, Financial Tribune reported.
