A transit corridor from Iran to Europe passing through Armenia was the main theme of the event, TCCIM’s news service reported.
The multimodal transit route aims to connect Iran to Germany via Black Sea. Plans are underway for the route to replace the one passing through Turkey amid obstacles hampering transit via the neighboring country, including security issues and a fuel dispute.
According to Sergey Valko, CEO of South Caucasus Railways, the plan includes two pathways, one from Duisburg to Tehran and another from Hamburg to the northwestern city of Tabriz, according to Financial Tribune.
“The cost of each 20-foot container being transported on the 8,900-km path [Duisburg-Tehran] is $3,940, with a transit period of 21 days.”
Referring to growing political and security tensions in Turkey, Gholamhossein Amiri, the head of Transportation and Logistics Federation of Iran, says as many as 2,500 Iranian trucks once used to cross the Turkish border daily, but the number has now plummeted to below 500.
