FAO stated in the most recent Quarterly Global Report (Crop Prospects and Food Situation) published in June 2017 that due to appropriate climate, Iran will stay second in the region after Turkey in wheat production in the current agricultural year, Financial Tribune reported.
The report says, “In Iran (the Islamic Republic of), the second biggest wheat producer in the subregion, above-average temperatures at the end of April accelerated crop development. The 2017 production in the Islamic Republic of Iran of 13.5 million tons is likely to be on par with 2016’s level and exceed the five-year average by 25 percent.”
It is expected that Iran’s wheat production to be 13.5m tons, which is 25% more than the recent 5 years’ average.
FAO predicted that rice production in Iran will also be 100 thousand tons more than 2016.
According to the Iranian official statistics, Iran produces three million tons of wheat more than the country’s need, from which two million tons can be exported.
In line with the export plans, the director of Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line (IRISL) said on June 12 that the first Iranian wheat cargo left Imam Khomeini Port, Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran, for Oman.
