APPU Congress kicks off in Tehran

EghtesadOnline: The 12th Asian Pacific Postal Union Congress hosted by Iran kicked off in Tehran on Monday with Secretary-General of the Congress Bashar Hossein, Iranian minister of communication Mahmoud Vaezi and the postal leaders and officials of 32 countries from Asia and Pacific in attendance.

A group of Iranian Members of Parliament and high-ranking officials are also attending the summit.

According to ISNA, the purpose of the summit is explaining and reviewing the regional policies in postal field and developing international cooperation.

The summit holds July 3-6 in Tehran after 17 years.

The Universal Postal Union, established by the Treaty of Bern of 1874, is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates postal policies among member nations, in addition to the worldwide postal system. Iran joined to the UPU in 1877.

APPU is the biggest regional union in Asian Pacific level and considered as the most important convention for developing and improving postal affairs in the region.
