A statement issued by Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs said that the two countries held constructive discussions for effective implementation of existing border mechanisms within the framework of Agreement for Administration of Pakistan-Iran border of 1960.
According to IRNA, it added Pakistan delegation was led by Mr. Mansoor Ahmad Khan, Director General (Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey), Ministry of Foreign Affairs while the Iranian delegation was led by Hossein Azar Panahi, Director General, International Legal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“They agreed to strengthen coordination and cooperation to effectively address the challenges posed by miscreants including drug smugglers, human trafficking and criminal networks. They also agreed on the need to prevent border violations.
Pakistan and Iran share 917 km long border,” it said.
In May this year Iran and Pakistan formed a border commission to have better coordination between the two neighbors for the security of the border.
On April 26 nine Iranian border guards were martyred and two others injured by terrorists near Pakistan border in southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan, when they were patrolling at the zero border point. The terrorists after the killings and abducting one Iranian border guard fled to Pakistan’s territories.
After the incident Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif visited Pakistan and met with Pakistani civil and military leadership to have better cooperation between the two countries for border security.
