Car companies have begun introducing electric hybrids in the local market, with Toyota already pushing its Prius model. All imported hybrids pay a 4% tariff, which is significantly lower than other gasoline-only models. The EV Outlander, which curbs use of the conventional engine in favor of the twin electric motors, will be built in Japan and shipped to Iran, according to the paper. Iran will be the first Middle East market where it rolls them out, following the introduction of the petrol-only version in 2016. Mitsubishi Motors' Iranian sales volume grew 16-fold on the year to about 3,200 units in 2016. The company plans to expand its Iran dealerships to 50 from the current 41 this year and hopes to boost brand recognition and sales, according to Financial Tribune.
