EghtesadOnline: The southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan attracted foreign investments worth $1.86 billion during the first term of Hassan Rouhani’s presidency (August 2013-17).

“The province became the third top province in the country for the first time in terms of attracting foreign investment,” Mandana Zanganeh, a provincial official, was quoted as saying by IRNA.

Zanganeh noted that 11 foreign investment permits were issued during the period, a majority of which were in the fields of renewable energies, steel and mine processing.

Turkey, Afghanistan, South Korea, Austria and Italy are major foreign investors in Sistan-Baluchestan, according to Financial Tribune.

“The Rouhani government paved the way for foreign trade by providing the necessary infrastructures, such that 80 foreign business delegations visited the province last year (March 2016-17),” she said.

Sistan-Baluchestan is home to farmlands ideal for cultivation of export products such as dates, citrus, banana and mango.

With eight fishing ports, the province is highly lucrative for fishery. The province also has a high share in the country’s mineral reserves.

It is home to the strategic port of Chabahar, Iran’s only oceanic port alongside the Persian Gulf.
