Head of Ports and Maritime Office in Astara Mahmood Mirnabili told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that during the first six-months of the Iranian year, 53 ships were loaded, with 29,906 tons of goods exported.
The number of ships docked in the port also shows 15 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the official.
Mirnabili also said that after the construction of a cereal terminal by mid next year, the number of ships loading and unloading in Astara Port will grow significantly.
Various kinds of wood, MDF, calcium carbonate, cement, tile, iron ingots, poly ethylene, and granite stone were among the main goods shipped in the port.
The multipurpose port spanning a 60-hectare area as the first port of Iran's private sector is the nearest and the most economical trade and transit route connecting the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe to each other.
The border city Astara lies in northern Gilan Province, neighboring the Republic of Azerbaijan.
