Iranian Transport Delegation in Turkmenistan

EghtesadOnline: Leading a high-ranking delegation, Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi set off to Turkmenistan on May 2 to attend transportation-related events during his two-day stay in the neighboring country.

The Iranian mission, together with 20 other delegations from the Economic Cooperation Organization member states attended the ninth session of ECO Transportation Minister’s Forum on Thursday in the city of Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan’s Balkan Province.

ECO, headquartered in Tehran, comprises 10 members, namely Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Set up in 1985, ECO aims to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states, Financial Tribune reported.

Earlier on Thursday, the Iranian delegation attended the inauguration of Turkmenbashi Port on the Caspian Sea coast.

On Wednesday, Akhoundi met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and the two sides stressed the importance of expanding bilateral, regional and pan-regional relations in a host of areas.

Also on Wednesday, an international forum dubbed “The Great Silk Road: Towards the New Frontiers of Development” was held. 

Alongside the Iranian delegation, representatives from 20 countries took part in this event, which was aimed at surveying ways of reviving the Silk Road, defining transport and transit corridors and expanding cooperation in these fields.
