According to Director General of Hormozgan Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization Daryoush Baqer-Javan, Shahid Rajaee Port accounted for 36% of the incoming transit goods and was ranked the most active border crossing among the country’s 32 borders over the period.
“The main transit goods were fuel, chemicals, construction materials, home appliances and cotton,” the official was quoted as saying by the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
Baqer-Javan noted that Shahid Rajaee Port was followed by border crossings of Parviz Khan in Kermanshah, Bazargan in West Azarbaijan and Bashmaq in Kurdestan, according to Financial Tribune.
“These four border crossings accounted for 71% of all the goods transited in the country during the period,” he said.
The official added that a total of 9.82 million tons of oil and non-oil products transited via Iranian roads last year, showing a 19% rise compared with the preceding year.
The main destinations for these transit products were Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Uzbekistan and Turkey.
Located 23 kilometers west of the port city of Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormozgan Province, Shahid Rajaee Port is Iran’s biggest container port at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz.
Over half of Iran’s commercial trading is carried out in Shahid Rajaee. The port complex also accounts for over 85% of all container throughput in the country.
According to Director General of Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Organization Allah-Morad Afifipour, more than 87.03 million tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at Shahid Rajaee Port in the last Iranian year, registering an 8% increase compared with the year before.
President Hassan Rouhani broke ground on Phase 3 of Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s biggest container port at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz in southern Hormozgan Province, back in February.
Upon the completion of the terminal within three years, the port’s capacity is expected to increase to 8 million TEU.
