Startup Weekend Themed on Health Set for Mid-Summer

EghtesadOnline: University of Tehran’s Virtual School of Medical Sciences is set to hold a startup weekend in late July, which is to be focused on the application of information technology to healthcare issues.

Participants in the event can attend educational workshops on how to transform ideas into efficient startups, receive specialized counseling services and will be provided with teambuilding opportunities, reported Shanbepress, a local news agency covering Iranian startups.

As an innovative and entrepreneurship event, the startup weakened named E-Health Startup Weekend aims to promote provision of health services through online platforms, using the cutting-edge technologies.

Those with bright ideas regarding digital healthcare will be invited to take part in the event. Subsequently, they will receive proper training on how to put their initiatives into effect, and may form teams for further collaborations, according to Financial Tribune.

After the implementation of the initiatives aided by veteran mentors, the ideas will be evaluated by a jury to eventually opt for the top three to pursue a commercialization agenda.

 Clearing the Way 

“Startup weekends and similar events are meant not only to pick out the best ideas but to provide individuals with proper training and problem-solving counsel, eventually to pave the way for accomplishing successful business ventures,” said the secretary of the E-Health Working Group at Vice Presidential Office for Science and Technology, Seyed Sajjad Moraveji.

He added that anyone interested in creative thinking can take part in the three-day event. 

The official website of the event cites its objectives: promoting the spirit of creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurship, providing the ambiance of creativity and entrepreneurship among elite university students in line with the goal of nurturing the required spirit for fresh business ventures in digital healthcare, identifying technological ideas in order to develop fledgling health businesses, using e-health creative ideas to cut down on medical care expenses, promoting equality in the health sector, making use of the potential in e-health businesses so as to improve health services and prevent diseases, identifying and inviting investors to provide financial support to budding startups and creating a proper link between entrepreneurs and potential investors.

In addition, its subthemes include items such as health literacy and self-care, digital prevention tools, smart systems for medical tourism, provision of smart communications between physicians and patients, symptom checkers, data security in EHR (electronic health record) system and virtual hospitals.

The E-health Startup Weekend will open on July 25 and conclude on 27; applicants may sign up until July 11.
