According to the Oil Ministry's news portal, Shana, upon its full implementation, the 1.7-kilometer pipeline will have the capacity of transferring 11 mcm per day.
The pipeline is being laid with the aim of supporting the offshore platforms of phases 4-5, utilizing the full potential of phases 6-8 and boosting gas sweetening capacity of phase 4-5 refineries. Pars Oil and Gas Company is implementing the project with the help of a domestic contractor. All the construction procedures are being conducted by Iranian experts.
Gas output from the offshore platforms of phases 4-5 currently stands at 56 mcm/d. Once fully developed, each phase will produce 56 mcm/d of sour gas, Financial Tribune reported.
South Pars is the world’s largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.
The giant reservoir is being developed in 24 phases. Iran hopes to complete all South Pars phases by March 2019, which target officials say requires an investment of $20-30 billion.
Iran uses natural gas for heating purposes and as feedstock for thermal power stations that constitute more than 80% of its installed electricity generating capacity. It also injects gas into underground reservoirs to increase crude oil recovery.
