EghtesadOnline: Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare Ali Rabiei said a total of 43 medical centers are under construction in Iran while studies are being carried out to soon build 58 more.

In the inauguration ceremony of Shiraz Social Security Organization’s 320-bed hospital on July 30, Rabiei said last year, a total of 2,500 beds were added to the organization’s medical centers all over the country, the government’s news portal reported.

The high official also pointed out that the total number of beds created for the Social Security Organization over the past 60 years amounts to 6,000, considering the 2,500 created last year a feat.

According to the Statistical Center of Iran, as of the fiscal 2016-17, there were one hospital per 83,780 and one hospital bed per 508 residents in Iran. The country had a total of 954 hospitals and each hospital had an average of 165 beds, Financial Tribune reported.

Alborz Province had the highest ratio of population to hospital with one hospital per 159,553 residents and Ilam had the lowest ratio with one hospital per 52,742 residents.

Semnan Province had the lowest ratio of population to bed, with one bed per 340 residents while Alborz had the highest population to bed ratio with one bed per 1,040 residents.

All hospitals in Bushehr, Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari, South Khorasan, North Khorasan, Semnan and Sistan-Baluchestan were state-owned, whereas of all hospitals in Tehran, about 42% were privately owned.

In December, China signed a contract with Iran to extend $2 billion in finance for the construction of five hospitals in the Islamic Republic.

The projects include two 1,000-bed hospitals for Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran, a 1,000-bed hospital for Iran’s University of Medical Sciences, a 330-bed hospital and a 540-bed hospital for Iran’s University of Medical Sciences.

These are to be built under the supervision of Iran’s Health Ministry within four years.

Earlier in December, Iran’s Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi said South Korea had agreed to finance the construction of three hospitals in Iran.
