EghtesadOnline: Iran is one of the most significant member states of the United Nations' International Maritime Organization and is moving toward the objectives of this organization, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim said on Saturday.

Lim was speaking during a ceremony to mark World Maritime Day and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the organization in Tehran.

Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi and Managing Director of Ports and Maritime Organization Mohammad Rastad, along with other senior executives in the maritime sector, were also present in the event, Mrud.ir reported.

With 173 member states and three associate members, IMO is a specialized UN agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and prevention of pollution by ships, according to Financial Tribune.

The Convention on the International Maritime Organization was adopted on March 6, 1948, at the UN Maritime Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland. The convention entered into force 10 years later on March 17, 1958, when the 21st state ratified the treaty.

IMO’s first meeting was held in London on January 6, 1959, in London. Since then, IMO member states have pursued their mission to develop the global regulatory framework for international shipping.
