Home Appliances Top Iran's List of Contraband Confiscated in Month to Sept. 22

EghtesadOnline: Home appliances topped the list of confiscated commodities in the sixth month of the current Iranian year (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22).

According to data released by the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade, the confiscated household appliances were worth 5.13 trillion rials ($21 million). 

Next on the list were cosmetics and toiletries, food products, auto spare parts, and cigarettes and tobacco worth $13 million, $700,000, $400,000 and $230,000 respectively.

The report puts the total value of the seized items at close to 5.13 trillion rials (around $35.5 million) during the period, with Alborz Province accounting for around $34 million of the sum, according to Financial Tribune.

Based on data released by the Statistics and Information General Bureau of the Headquarters to Combat Smuggling of Goods and Foreign Exchange last week, close to 33.15 trillion rials ($245.55 million) worth of contraband goods were confiscated during the five months to Aug. 22, showing a 123% surge compared with the similar period of last year.

Automotives ($61.14 million), home appliances ($29.8 million) and alcoholic beverages ($10.97 million) topped the list of contraband confiscated during the five months. 

Other confiscated goods included fabric, apparel, oil products, rice, livestock, armament and ammunition, satellite and computer equipment, antiques, audiovisual equipment, mobile phones, toys, shoes, medical equipment, gold and jewelry, Mehr News Agency reported.

Fuel topped the list of goods confiscated, which was about to exit the country. Around 37 million liters of fuel worth more than $6.14 million were confiscated during the five-month period, registering a twofold and fivefold increase in weight and value respectively year-on-year.
