Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani and CEO of Iran Airports company Rahmatollah Mahabadi were present at the inauguration, the news portal of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development reported.
The projects, aimed at upgrading safety and service standards, included the reconstruction of a concrete runway, renovation of lighting systems, enhancement of the firefighting equipment and vehicles, creation of green areas and the installation of self checkout systems in the first and second terminals.
Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport was the busiest domestic airport during the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21-Sept. 22), with 65,973 takeoffs and landings from a total of 189,103 domestic flights. More than 7.66 million passengers were transported at this airport, according to Financial Tribune.
The development projects inaugurated on Tuesday followed the launch of seven construction and renovation projects at the airport with a government investment of 700 billion rials ($5 million) last month.
Those projects included the renovation of terminals, construction of piers for air bridge, renovation of unloading areas and installation of lights for landsides.
The airport’s Director General Mirsaeed Safinia said at the time that the seven projects would take 18 months to complete.
"Renovation of terminals 1 and 2 of Mehrabad Airport is expected to be completed by the end of the next fiscal year in March 2020," says Mohammad Reza Zahmatkeshan, an official with Iran Airports Company.
