EghtesadOnline: More than 185,000 tons of commodities worth around $137 million were exported from the northern Golestan Province during the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21-Sept. 22), which shows a 57% and 62% growth in weight and value respectively compared with the similar period of last year.

According to Director General of Golestan Customs Offices Ebrahim Hosseini, rebar and iron, dairy products, tomato paste and polystyrene were the main exported goods from the province over the period, IRNA reported.

The main export destinations were Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Hosseini said that close to 37,000 tons of goods worth $15 million were imported into the province during the same period, registering a 15% decline in value compared with the corresponding period of last year, according to Financial Tribune.

Mostafa Sedaqat, the head of Golestan Veterinary General Office's Public Relations told Financial Tribune earlier this week that shrimp produced in the northern province has received Iran Veterinary Organization’s permit to be directly exported to the European countries.

“After many inspections and audits over the past months, IVO experts verified that Golestan’s shrimp meets the European Commission’s standards and can be exported directly to EU member states,” the official said.

Prior to this, the official noted that shrimp produced in the province used to be exported under brands belonging to southern provinces like Hormozgan.

“Gomishan Shrimp Farm in northwest Golestan is the only site producing farmed shrimps in the province. This huge facility has made infrastructural renovations and raised the bar on hygienic considerations to be able to meet the EC standards,” he added.

Sedaqat noted that some 2,500 tons of shrimps are estimated to be produced in the province during the current Iranian year (March 2018-19).

“So far, plans are to export a first batch of around 50 kilograms of fresh shrimps to Spain. This will pave the way for further exports to Europe. Traders have to take the lead from here on and find footholds in European markets. We already have exports to China, East Asia, the UAE and other littoral states of the Persian Gulf,” he said.

Shrimp produced in Golestan are of the litopenaeus vannamei species.
