EghtesadOnliune: Exports of red willow from the city of Mahallat in Markazi Province earned $2.5 million in the current fiscal that ends in March, Reza Maleki, the head of Industries, Mining and Trade Organization of Mahallat said on Wednesday.

Over 800,000 branches of red willow weighing 300 tons were grown in 70 hectares of land devoted to the cultivation of this plant in Mahallat in the current year.

Mahallat ranks first in production and export of red willow as well as other flowers and plants, IRNA reported.

Red Willow, also called Purple Willow, is a small tree from the Salicacease species with slender standing branches that normally reach up to 45 ft (14 m) in height, according to Financial Tribune.

Like most other willows, it commonly grows along riverbanks and in areas with high soil moisture. The plant has slender flexible pedicle that is greenish brown in the shaded areas and reddish purple in the sun.
