EghtesadOnline: Reports published by the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization reveal an alarming picture of road mortality rates. Close to 14,000 people lost their lives in road mishaps in 10 months to January 20.

The death rate is 0.8% higher compared to the corresponding period last year.

A comparative look at the LMO chart shows that during the period under study, 13,964 people lost their lives in road accidents. The figure was 13,847 in the same period last year.

The ILMO also said that the death rate on the roads inside the cities decreased by 3.2% during the investigated period, according to Financial Tribune.

Of the total lives lost, 3,579 were on city paths. Last year the number almost reached 3,700.

During the 10 months, inter-city roadways claimed 9,407 innocent lives, 1.8% more than the 9,242 recorded last year.

In addition, 978 people died in suburban road accidents, which is 7.7% higher compared to the last year's 908 fatal accidents.

Notorious for the high road death rate, Fars tops the other provinces with 1,145 people, followed by Tehran at 1,034 and Khorasan Razavi with 961 deaths.

Ilam, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad and Yazd provinces had the lowest fatalities respectively with 125, 152, and 189.

Traffic Police say sleep-deprivation (fatigue), speeding, overtaking from the wrong side, running a red light, talking on the cell phone, text messaging and munching behind the wheel plus low-quality vehicles and roads are the main killers on the roads.

Needless to say, motorcyclists and their dangerous driving habits also contribute generously to the increasing number of road victims.
