In a news briefing on Sunday, CEO Abbas Aliabadi said the new C-class MGT-40 turbine, which has high safety standards, will be sold to power stations plus oil, gas and petrochemical plants, mainly in the Persian Gulf region.
"MGT-40 is a major industrial achievement and one of the best-in-class turbines in the world. Not only does it run on natural gas, but also on LNG," Aliabadi was quoted as saying by the website Iranenergy.news.
The turbine's efficiency is plus 32% and its safety, reliability and maintainability near perfect, according to Financial Tribune.
Reliability is the probability of survival after the unit/system operates for a certain period of time. Maintainability means how soon the unit/system can be repaired.
The turbine was manufactured at an estimated cost of $45 million by Iranian engineers and plans are under way to further expand its capability of collecting and running on low-pressure flare gas – a measure to help safeguard the environment and curb air pollution.
“The new gas turbine will let us increase electricity production without building costly power units because it can easily be converted to a combined-cycle turbine," he said. The machine can also function in combined heat and power (CHP) plants.
Main components of the turbine include rotors, shells, turbine blades and compressors, generator and control system, all of which are designed, engineered and produced by Mapna.
Aliabadi went on to say that MGT-40 has a special design which lets the machine operate in bad weather conditions as well as at high temperature and elevation.
MGT-40 is one of the key components of a 42-megawatt gas power plant in Zahedan, capital of Sistan and Baluchestan Province.
The turbine was first installed in a Zahedan power plant in southeast Iran last November and has since functioned without any technical problems.
Self-Reliance
Mapna CEO said domestic companies have become self-reliant in building thermal power plants of different varieties including combined-cycle power plants that combine a gas turbine and steam turbine.
The consortium unveiled the E-class MGT-70 turbine in 2017.
Mapna supplied 12 MGT-70 units to the Iraqi Rumaila Combined-Cycle Power Plant and one is now operating at a combined-cycle power plant in Parand, 60 kilometers southwest of Tehran.
"Our company is cooperating with the German engineering conglomerate Siemens," the CEO said without elaboration.
Mapna signed a contract with Siemens in 2016 for 20 gas turbines and associated generators.
The Iranian tech giant has played a key role in upgrading Iran's power sector. It also has projects in Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Oman and Indonesia, to name a few.
