EghtesadOnline: UNIDO experts met with Iran IT Organization officials in Tehran on Sunday, discussing ways to support Iranian startups and technology firms.

ITO’s website reports that the meeting is part of efforts implemented by the state organization affiliated to the Information and Communications Technology Ministry to pave the way for Iranian startups growth. In addition to startups, the initiative will also extend support to small-and medium-sized enterprises active in the field of ICTs.

During the meeting, representatives of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization met with managers of several startups, including Basalam, Faranesh and Ahoog, according to Financial Tribune.

The Twitter account of UNIDO Iran office (@unidoiran) posted, “Fruitful meeting and informative discussions with Iranian startups and ICT Ministry’s officials at the Information Technology Organization (ITO) in Tehran. The purpose of #UNIDO technical mission is to customize a work plan for internationalizing #ICT sector in #Iran.”

Later on Monday, UNIDO experts visited Digikala, a major Iranian online retailer, and Azadi Innovation Factory in western Tehran.

The Twitter account wrote about the visits, “Second productive day of #UNIDO experts’ meeting with #Iranian #ICT #startups organized by #ITO and ICT Ministry.”

UNIDO earlier held talks with the ICT Ministry’s top brass to help Iranian startups establish a foothold in neighboring countries.

The United Nations’ specialized agency’s managing director, Philippe Scholtes, and the UN specialized agency’s chief of Regional Division for Asia and the Pacific, Ralf Bredel, met with ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi and IT Organization’s Director Amir Nazemi in late August.

During the talks, Jahromi highlighted the importance of collaborations between Iran and international agencies like UNIDO for boosting the country’s ICT development and startup ecosystem.

Jahromi pointed to his earlier meeting with UNIDO Chief LI Yong in Vienna, Austria, in April and said agreements reached during that meeting will hopefully prepare the ground for the expansion of collaborations between Iran and UNIDO in the fields of ICT and startups.

Scholtes said digitalization of services and expanding the application of ICTs in industries are high on the agenda of UNIDO.

He also noted that UNIDO is keen on expansion of ties with Iran and “hopefully, the ICT Ministry will play an active role in this process”.

UNIDO’s officials also sat down with ITO Organization’s director. During the meeting, Nazemi detailed the latest developments in Iran’s ICT infrastructure, while outlining expansion of Iranian startup ecosystem.

CEOs of major Iranian startups, including ride-hailing company Snapp and Mamanpaz that offer homemade food to online customers also met with UNIDO officials.
