EghtesadOnline: More than 15,500 tons of greenhouse products worth $31 million were exported from Aras Free Zone in West Azarbaijan Province during the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21-Dec. 21).

“During the nine months, 18,000 tons of greenhouse products were produced from 106 hectares of greenhouses in the FTZ," CEO of Aras FTZ Mohsen Nariman was quoted as saying by IRNA.

Last year (March 2018-19), production hit 15,000 tons from 73 hectares, Financial Tribune quoted him as saying.

According to the official, presently, 259 hectares of greenhouses are being constructed in Aras FTZ.

Situated in northwest Iran bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan and the semi-autonomous Nakhchivan region, Aras has become the main gateway to mainland Iran from the northern Commonwealth of Independent States.

An agreement worth €700 million was signed in May 2019 with an Iranian-European consortium for the construction, maintenance and operation of a 204-kilometer railroad in Aras Free Zone.

This will reconnect the closed railroad between Iran and the CIS through Iran's territory to Azerbaijan. Upon its operationalization, commercial interactions with northern neighbors will resume via this route.

The railroad construction is expected to conclude in five years.
