EghtesadOnline: A total of 13,000 tons of contraband worth 800 billion rials ($5.63 million) were destroyed in the 10 months to Jan. 20, according to the deputy head of the Organization for Collection and Sale of State-owned Properties of Iran.

Seyyed Hossein Mir-Moeini added that 6,100 tons of contraband worth 900 billion rials ($6.33 million) were destroyed in the year ending March 2019, IRNA reported.

On Feb. 17, 400 tons of expired, harmful and smuggled food, cosmetics and tobacco worth 19 billion rials ($133,802) were destroyed at the organization’s headquarters in Tehran, according to Financial Tribune.

According to Boroumand Mirzaiepour, the head of Tehran office of the organization, the destroyed goods had been confiscated since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2019).

“Smuggled capital goods will be exported, if there are concerns they could hurt the domestic economy. If not, they will be put at the disposal of technical and vocational training institutes. However, smuggled cars can’t be exported because their import documents are not verifiable,” he said.
