EghtesadOnline: Two dams, Molla Sadra and Tang-e-Khomar, were inaugurated in southern Fars Province on Tuesday. Located 140 kilometers from the provincial capital Shiraz, the first dam will help expand farming in the region, a deputy energy minister said.

“With 92 million cubic meters capacity, the dam will provide water to 4,400 hectares of farmland in Marvdasht,” the Energy Ministry news portal quoted Qassem Taqizadeh Khamesi as saying.

The second dam, Tang-e Khomar, in Fasa County will help control floods and feed aquifers to raise groundwater levels, he added.

“There are 10 dams in the province and three are under construction,” the deputy minister noted, adding that they will be launched by 2022.

With the inauguration of the two dams, the number of dams in Iran reached 194 and seven more will be launched in summe.

Besides the latest inaugurations, a water supply project also came online in Fars to transfer water from Rudbal Dam in Darab County to Fasa via a 20-km pipeline.

Fasa has suffered from a severe drop in groundwater levels due to drought and access to drinking water in the region has been difficult. The new project will ease access to potable water in several urban and rural areas in the dry region. The two dams and water supply project cost $20 million.
