Its purpose is to serve as a standard framework for time-use statistics based on activities grouped in a meaningful way.
The SCI report shows an Iranian individual living in urban areas spent the better part of the day on the following: 11 hours and 34 minutes on self-care and maintenance (including sleep); four hours and 19 minutes on culture, leisure, mass-media and sports (four hours and 35 minutes for men and four hours and three minutes for women); two hours and 46 minutes on employment and related activities (four hours and 59 minutes for men); two hours and 51 minutes on unpaid domestic services for household and family members (four hours and 46 minutes for women); and one hour and 36 minutes on socializing and communication, community participation and religious practice.
The least amount of time spent by an Iranian was two minutes on unpaid volunteer, trainee and other unpaid work.
Among men, the most hours of the day were spent on “self-care and maintenance”, “employment and related activities”, and “culture, leisure, mass-media and sports practices”.
Among women, the greater part of the day was spent on “self-care and maintenance”, “unpaid domestic services for household and family members”, and “culture, leisure, mass-media and sports practices”.
ICATUS provides a framework with standardized concepts and definitions for the systematic dissemination of internationally comparable time use statistics, regardless of the type of instruments used for data collection. It can be further used to guide the collection of time use data, or be adapted into countries’ classifications reflecting national context and needs.
