Services Sector's Share of Job Market at 49% in Q3

EghtesadOnline: The services sector’s share of the Iranian employed population reached 49% with 11.48 million in the third quarter of the current fiscal year (Sept. 22-Dec. 20, 2020), 1% less than the corresponding period of last year, latest data released by the Statistical Center of Iran show.

The services sector consists of wholesale and retail trade; restaurants and hotels; transport, storage and communications; financing, insurance, real estate and business services; as well as community, social, education, health and personal services.

The industrial and agricultural sectors provided 34.3% and 16.7% of jobs respectively in Q3. 

Over 8.02 million were employed in the industrial sector, indicating a year-on-year increase of 1.4% while 3.9 million worked in the agriculture sector, posting a 0.4% decline YOY. 

The services sector employed 9.49 million men and 1.98 million women, of whom 6.95 million men and 1.06 million women were active in the industrial sector and 3.27 million men and 632,542 women worked in the agriculture sector in Q3. 

The SCI report also shows services sector accounted for 58.1% or 10.12 million of all jobs in urban areas and 22.7% or 1.35 million of jobs in rural areas. 

The industrial sector made up 35.5% or 6.17 million of the jobs in urban areas and constituted 30.7% or 1.84 million of employment in rural areas. This is while 6.4% or 1.11 million of the total jobs in urban areas and 46.6% or 2.79 million of the jobs in rural areas were in the agriculture sector. 

The Q3 employment rate was 37.5% (23.41 million), down 2.1% compared with the same quarter of last Iranian year. Employment rates for men and women were 63.2% and 11.8%, respectively, which constituted 19.72 million men and 3.69 million women in Q3. 

The employment rate was 36.4% or 17.41 million in urban areas and 41% or 5.99 million in rural areas. 

The share of employment among university graduates stood at 25% of the total employed population, wherein male and female graduate employment’s share was 21.6% and 43.6%, respectively. Graduate employment rates in urban and rural areas were a respective 30.8% and 8.4% of the total population of job-holders. 

Employment is defined as persons of working age engaged in any activity to produce goods or provide services for pay or profit, whether at work during the reference period or not at work due to a temporary absence from a job, or to working-time arrangement.
