Sectoral Share of Employment in Q2 Under SCI Review

EghtesadOnline: The services sector employed 48.8% of the Iranian employed population (11.43 million) in the second quarter of the current Iranian year (June 22-Sept. 22), 0.7% higher than the corresponding period of last year, whereas industrial and agricultural sectors provided 33.8% and 17.4% of jobs respectively.

Over 7.9 million were employed in the industrial sector, indicating an increase of 0.4% compared with the same period of the year before and 4.06 million worked in the agriculture sector, posting a 1.1% decrease YOY. 

The services sector consists of wholesale and retail trade; restaurants and hotels; transport, storage and communications; financing, insurance, real-estate and business services; as well as community, social, education, health and personal services.

The services sector employed 9.44 million men and 1.99 million women in Q2, of whom 7.07 million men and 835,726 women were active in the industrial sector and 3.39 million men and 665,660 women worked in the agriculture sector. 

Services sector accounted for 57.5% or 10.04 million of all jobs in urban areas and 23.3% or 1.38 million of jobs in rural areas. The industrial sector made up 35.4% or 6.18 million of the jobs in urban areas and comprised 29.1% or 1.72 million jobs in rural areas. This is while 7.1% or 1.24 million of urban jobs and 47.6% or 2.82 million of rural jobs were in the agriculture sector. 

The total Q2 employment rate was 37.2% (23.4 million), down 0.6% compared with the same quarter of last Iranian year. Employment rates for men and women were 63.3% and 11.1%, respectively, which constituted 19.91 million men and 3.49 million women in Q2. 

Employment rate was 36.1% (17.48 million people) in urban areas and 40.7% (5.93 million) in rural areas. 

The share of employment of university graduates stood at 25.6% of the total employed population, wherein male and female graduate employment rates were 22.1% and 46.1%, respectively. Graduate employment rates in urban and rural areas stood at 31.3% and 8.9% of the total population of job-holders. 

Employment is defined as persons of working age engaged in any activity to produce goods or provide services for pay or profit, whether at work during the reference period or not at work due to a temporary absence from a job, or to working-time arrangement.
