Iran, China to Launch Joint Climate Change Research Center

The head of Iran’s Soil Conservation and Watershed Management Research Institute announced the launch of cooperation between Iran and China for establishing a joint research center in the field of managing the desert areas and climatic changes using runoffs and floods.

Ataollah Ebrahimi said the initial agreements were reached last year within the framework of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the aim of exchanging technical know-how and experiences between the two countries in the fields of watershed management and aquifers.

Iran’s provinces of Khuzestan and Sistan and Balouchestan will likely be chosen as the primary locations for this joint cooperation, he emphasized, Mehr news agency reported.

In these pilot projects, “We are looking for new models to stabilize dust particles, distribution of floods and desalination using the local capacities.”

Under the memorandum of understanding inked by the two sides, it was agreed that China, in addition to transferring its experiences and technical know-how, would support these pilot projects technically since it has fruitful experience in handling watershed management projects, he stated. / Tasnim
